Being an apprentice

At Tesco, we welcome individuality and uniqueness. We always want our colleagues to feel they can be themselves at work and we’re committed to helping them be at their best. We’re building an inclusive workplace, a place to actively celebrate the cultures, personalities and preferences of our colleagues who share the same purpose, to serve our customers a little better every day, and you’ll have a vital part to play.

You’ll be encouraged to try new things, push yourself and learn from mistakes while you get hands-on experience. You’ll also have paid, time out to study, so you can complete your apprenticeship. And, like all Tesco colleagues, you’ll have access to a wide variety of workshops and resources, to help you develop skills like resilience and adaptable thinking, as well as how to look after your wellbeing. And don’t worry, your colleagues will be there to support you throughout your apprenticeship.

“I believe there’s definitely a level of importance to working near to where you live. You’re able to not only help and serve your own community but offer a more personal relationship and service to your customers, making their shopping experience better and tailored” – Abdi

What it’s like working here

What it’s like working here

The office is a relaxed and friendly environment, with a casual dress code. We have flexible work spaces and places to enjoy down-time with colleagues. Office colleagues get a laptop, so they can work anywhere on campus and from home. Working in store is all about interacting with customers and leading a team. A role in retail will involve some early starts, late finishes, night shifts and working weekends and bank holidays. Serving millions of shoppers per week is hard work, but very rewarding!
Learning path

Learning path

You’ll build your skills for the future with real-life experience, workshops and resources, as well as support and mentoring from your colleagues. Heart, our on-site training academy makes it easy to take advantage of learning sessions - from quick Lunch and Learns to more in-depth courses. Apprentices working in store will also have the same access to training, but delivered locally by one of our experienced Learning Partners.
Health and wellbeing

Health and wellbeing

We want to inspire and help colleagues to look after their mental and physical wellbeing, so they can feel great at work and at home. You'll be offered free enrollment to the Headspace app, which can help you experience a calmer, clearer mind, in just a few minutes each day. You’ll also have access to resources developed in partnership with experts such as Mind, Nuffield Health and the British Nutrition Foundation.

“I chose to do an apprenticeship rather than going to university as it gave me the opportunity to study towards a professional qualification whilst also getting on-the-job experience” – Amy
