Stores programme

If you’re ready to work in a fast-paced industry, dealing with different people every day, and want to become part of our senior management team in our stores, then this is the programme for you. You’ll work in stores of all sizes, from our convenient Express stores, to our large format Extra stores, some of which have over 200 colleagues. You’ll get the opportunity to be part of the management team from the outset and experience managing people and operations. From day one, you’ll be part of the management team in the store. Every store has a weekly “Team 5” session which is a general update from senior management on what’s important that week.

Experience different departments

After your two-month induction, you’ll start shadowing a Department Manager. Here you’ll become the customer’s best friend and learn even more about our store standards, delivering on targets, managing a team of colleagues, and above all, delivering great service to our customers. After five weeks you’ll become a Department Manager for the next two months. Your support network will be at hand to help you all along the way.

Building your knowledge

After this time you’ll shadow the Front End Manager. Front End covers check-outs and self-scan, the customer service desk, and cash office. It’s often the largest team within the store, anything up to thirty people, so it’s seriously pacey. After five weeks you’ll start managing this department yourself so be sure to keep smiling! This may sound daunting but don’t worry, you’ll be supported by other managers in the store and we bet you’ll be great at it.

Be part of the senior team

As this programme is designed to give you the training and on-the-job experience to become part of the senior team, we want you to get to see every area. You’ll shadow a People Manager (HR) in store for six week to support colleagues by organising engagement activities, helping with performance management, and much more. Next you’ll shadow a Deputy Store Manager for six weeks to learn more about how our stores operate.

Building your management experience

Next you’ll shadow a Deputy Store Manager for six weeks to learn more about how our stores operate. This is a demanding role as it supports the Store Manager with managing all the department managers as well as ensuring high standards, stock levels, security, and service. Finally, you’ll shadow a Store Manager for five weeks. This is where you’ll learn how to run a store and understand more about the challenges and opportunities a Store Manager faces daily.

Be a senior manager before the end of the programme

You’ll finish the programme with a six month placement as a member of the senior team within a store. The placement role will depend on the progress you’ve made up to this point. You could be a Deputy Store Manager in one of our convenience stores or a People Manager in a larger store, or even managing our Grocery Home Shopping team. This final placement is where you can put your training into practice by tackling all the various challenges that take place in our busy stores. We hope you ace it!
