General Merchandise - the homebird

Tesco isn’t just about food. We also bring great products to customers across our markets. Whether offered online or in store, we strive to give customers a streamlined shopping experience giving them products they like, at prices they love.

From furniture to the latest craze in toys and eco-friendly lightbulbs, we use insight to understand what our customers love and want. Innovation is key.

General Merchandise (GM) graduates understand our customers, and truly get behind the brand. They challenge our existing practices with their creativity and in doing so help us to stay ahead of the competition. We offer two routes in General Merchandise: buying and merchandising. During your two year programme you’ll either develop and source great product ranges, or you’ll strategically ensure the ranges are delivered to the right place at the right time, for the right price.

We match the needs of our graduates in the same way as those of our customers. That’s why we provide graduates with great training and development, helping you to continue to grow.

If working in the General Merchandise department of the UK’s largest supermarket sounds like it’s for you, apply now!

Buying and Merchandising: what’s the difference?

On the programme you’ll follow a Buying or a Merchandising route. A Buyer works closely with our suppliers to ensure that we’re sourcing the right products for customers. A Merchandiser delves into the detail of data, helping us to ensure we have the right amount of stock at the right time.

Training: Insights

As a graduate you will be supported through your programme with great training which will enable you to develop both your technical skills and leadership skills. Our Insights training course supports our apprentices to learn more about themselves and their style. These training days are done alongside fellow apprentices and graduates, so they're a great opportunity to network too!

Collaborating across the business

Our graduates work closely with Product Development to help Tesco create innovative products in line with customer trends. From working on products for our Christmas range to supporting the business with their pledge to reduce food waste, there's lot of exciting projects to get involved with.
